About the Role
Staff Ushers interact directly with patrons attending San Francisco Symphony's concerts and events, providing helpful, welcoming, professional, efficient, and accessible service. This flexible position involves shifts scheduled on an "as needed" basis, primarily on weeknights and weekends, with occasional weekday morning and matinee shifts. Staff Ushers are expected to remain until all public members have vacated the venue.
Responsibilities
- Greet and engage with audience members, ensuring they feel welcomed and valued.
- Answer audience queries, providing timely and useful information and guidance.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the venue, policies, procedures, and upcoming events.
- Be flexible with duties and working hours, including weeknight evenings and weekend shifts.
- Provide guidance to Volunteer Ushers.
- Instruct on emergency procedures and resolve conflicts.
- Attend Emergency Response Plan meetings and implement the plan when necessary.
- Place radio calls to First Aid staff when needed.
- Attend CPR, AED, and Life Saving courses.
- Participate in providing feedback for the Ushers’ Liaison Committee.
- Attend other required trainings.
- Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.
Requirements
- Must become a member of Theatrical Employees Union – Local B-18.
- Must provide usher coverage for an assigned area for an extended period, including standing and traversing stairs.
- Consistent availability on weeknights and weekends.
- Customer service and patron or guest service experience preferred.
- Experience as an usher at a performing arts venue is desirable.
- Excellent verbal communication skills.
- Flexible attitude and patient/tactful in resolving conflict.
- Professional appearance and polite demeanor.
- Ability to work with and provide guidance to Volunteer Ushers.
- Handle conflict resolution in a customer service environment.
- Use ticket scanners and two-way radio / walkie-talkie.
- Follow required dress code.
- Exhibit sensitivity to and understanding of the San Francisco Symphony’s diverse audience members.
- Communicate effectively with a diverse range of people, including donors, prospective donors, volunteers, board members, and community partners.
- Sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a performing arts setting.
- Ability to stand or sit for prolonged periods.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull moderate amounts of weight.
- Ability to traverse moderate amounts of stairs.
- Ability to operate ticket scanning equipment requiring repetitive hand and wrist motions.
