About the Role

Exa is seeking a Director of Communications to build the public voice of the company and its leaders. This role focuses on developing and expressing founders' and executives' public points of view through ghostwriting essays, posts, and op-eds. It also involves managing the speaking pipeline, press relations (including agency management), social and owned channels, company announcements, crisis communications, and leveraging AI in practice.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and express leaders' public points of view through essays, tweets, op-eds, and interviews.
  • Ghostwrite content at volume and high quality, ensuring it aligns with the leader's voice.
  • Manage the pipeline for conferences, podcasts, panels, and industry events, including sourcing, evaluation, securing, prepping, and coaching.
  • Own media strategy and results, managing the press agency and building an in-house function.
  • Manage launch coverage, reactive and inbound press, and relationships with key AI infrastructure reporters.
  • Own company social presence and editorial cadence, including voice and amplification of engineering work.
  • Coordinate employee engagement to amplify company social media.
  • Own the narrative and calendar for company announcements, launches, and milestones.
  • Develop the crisis and issues readiness playbook, including escalation paths, holding statements, and spokesperson prep.
  • Utilize AI in research, drafting, and measurement while maintaining human authenticity in public statements.

Requirements

  • 8+ years in communications, PR, or editorial roles, with experience within a high-growth technology company.
  • Exceptional writing craft, specifically ghostwriting, with samples and permission to discuss.
  • Proven track record of building an executive's public profile and social followers, with evidence of growth drivers.
  • Demonstrated press results in technology or enterprise media.
  • Experience securing meaningful speaking placements and prepping individuals for them.
  • Experience managing an agency effectively, including setting briefs and holding them to results.
  • Sound judgment under pressure, with experience handling at least one difficult public moment.
  • Sufficient technical literacy to write credibly about AI, search, and infrastructure.
