About the Role

Mater is seeking an experienced Payroll Manager to lead the delivery of end-to-end payroll services across its diverse and complex workforce. This role provides strategic and operational leadership to a team of payroll professionals, ensuring accurate, compliant, and timely payroll delivery while driving continuous improvement and transformation initiatives. It's an exciting opportunity for a payroll leader who thrives in a large, complex environment, balancing operational excellence with innovation, governance, and customer experience.

Responsibilities

  • Leading end-to-end payroll operations across Mater entities
  • Ensuring payroll accuracy, compliance, and service excellence
  • Driving process improvement, automation, and payroll transformation initiatives
  • Managing payroll governance, audits, risk, and compliance activities
  • Monitoring payroll performance, controls, and financial reconciliations
  • Leading payroll system enhancements, upgrades, and implementations
  • Building strong partnerships across People & Culture, Finance, Technology, and operational leadership teams
  • Coaching and developing a high-performing payroll team, including two Payroll Operations Leads and a Payroll Compliance Manager

Requirements

  • Extensive experience managing payroll operations within a large, industrially complex organisation
  • Strong knowledge of Australian payroll legislation, taxation, superannuation, and enterprise agreements
  • Experience leading payroll transformation, systems implementation, and process improvement initiatives
  • Strong governance, compliance, audit, and risk management capability
  • Exceptional stakeholder engagement and influencing skills
  • Experience leading and developing high-performing teams
  • Advanced analytical and reporting skills, ideally including experience with Power BI, SQL, or similar tools
  • All successful candidates may be required to complete pre-employment checks (including criminal history, working rights, medical, and working with children checks)
