About the Role

The Governance Specialist Assistant (GSA) supports the Assistant Executive Director of Governance (AEDG) in training, consulting, and developing the Associated Students Board of Directors. The GSA manages outreach, engagement, policy compliance, and general Board support, acting as a liaison between Governance, the student body, and Administration. This role involves policy analysis, grassroots organizing, and shared governance outreach.

Responsibilities

  • Performs, schedules, and/or mediates ongoing Board trainings to develop civic engagement skills, grassroots organizing, policy comprehension, and yearly certifications.
  • Organizes opportunities for Board outreach events, including tabling efforts, townhalls, and open forums.
  • Provides support to the Board of Directors to ensure ongoing compliance with relevant policies.
  • Serves as a liaison and support for Lobby Corps to mediate, schedule, advertise, and execute grassroots lobbying efforts.
  • Maintains open lines of communication between the Board and the campus community, soliciting feedback and maintaining campus relations.
  • Accompanies and assists Board members and Lobby Corps members in advocacy efforts, including travel to the California Higher Education Student Summit (CHESS) and lobbying.
  • Assists the Elections Commissioner with organizing year-round outreach efforts to educate students about the Board of Directors.
  • Supports the AEDG in ensuring timely publication of agendas/minutes in compliance with AS policies.
  • Works closely with Executive Office staff on improving materials and resources available to the Board.
  • Monitors systems to ensure policies and principles are followed by the Board of Directors and comply with laws.
  • Assists the AEDG in developing operating policies and procedures for Governance operations.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of applicable laws, rules, policy & procedures related to assigned activities.
  • Thorough understanding and literacy analyzing and understanding legislative policies, proposals, bills, etc.
  • Working knowledge of the principles and practices of public policy.
  • Ability to provide unbiased council for the benefit of the organization.
  • Ability to negotiate and work with a variety of working styles and personalities.
  • Flexibility and patience to teach applicable skills on an ongoing basis.
  • Ability to remain professional in emotionally charged or high pressure situations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, especially via email.
