About the Role

Second Stage Theater is seeking a Director of Production to lead all theatre production requirements and teams. This senior staff member will report to the Artistic Director and collaborate with the Executive Director, overseeing the Production Management team for both Broadway and Off-Broadway productions. The role involves strategic oversight, managing the production lifecycle, and ensuring a positive, inclusive, and safe environment while maintaining timely and cost-effective execution.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the execution of all production operations across Second Stage’s theaters.
  • Collaborate with Artistic Director and Executive Director in creating and adhering to Second Stage’s seasonal and production calendars.
  • Create and maintain annual production budgets, track expenditures, and generate expense reports.
  • Collaborate with directors, designers, and Artistic Staff to align artistic vision with resources.
  • Oversee and run all production-related meetings and monitor department progress.
  • Cultivate and promote a safe working environment in accordance with health and safety regulations and best theater practices.
  • Verify and uphold Second Stage’s compliance with local and national collective bargaining agreements.
  • Oversee all production teams and recruit/hire new staff for production needs.
  • Coach and develop staff members by monitoring work quality, providing feedback, facilitating conflict resolution, and completing performance evaluations.
  • Maintain and approve direct report timesheets, expense reports, PTO requests, and other personnel records.
  • Delegate work to Production staff.
  • Perform other duties to support the Production Department / Second Stage.
  • Provide clear communication to the creative team regarding Second Stage resources (Budget, Schedule, Staffing).
  • Create, maintain, and update design guidelines, relevant Second Stage policies, and show calendars for creative teams.

Requirements

  • 5+ years prior experience in a director role of a theater production department.
  • Understanding and knowledge of technical theatre disciplines, including the ability to read technical design drawings.
  • Outstanding leadership skills with a strong ability to lead multiple teams, delegate, and communicate effectively across departments.
  • Demonstrated creative judgment, excellent problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
  • Proven experience in handling production and design processes on large- and small-scale productions.
  • Budget management experience.
  • Strong time management skills with adaptability to changing priorities, deadlines, and numerous concurrent projects.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability and willingness to exercise professional courtesy and discretion, and maintain confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated computer skills including G-Suite, Dropbox, and Microsoft Office.
  • Working knowledge of and willingness to promote current health and safety practices of the theater industry.
  • Experience, ability, and commitment to work with and foster a diverse community of individuals and teams.
  • Working knowledge of IATSE, AFM, USA, SDC, AEA and LORT collective bargaining agreements.
