About the Role

The Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) is seeking an Art Services Technician to join the Logistics and Art Services team. This role involves installing and dismantling artworks, preparing gallery spaces, assisting with lighting, and transporting art throughout the gallery.

Responsibilities

• Install and dismantle works of art in gallery spaces and temporary artist installations for events.
• Assess hanging and installation requirements and source necessary tools and equipment.
• Determine appropriate placement and installation methods for works of art in consultation with project team members.
• Resolve installation issues in consultation with Supervisor or Manager.
• Safely handle works of art with focus, care, and efficiency.
• Install and remove graphics including labels, panels, and other materials.
• Prepare exhibition spaces by performing minor building, moving, repairing, and painting of walls.
• Assist with the preparation and installation of display furniture for art objects.
• Transport works of art to and from various spaces for conservation, framing, photography, exhibitions, and viewings.
• Load and unload crated/uncrated works of art for exhibition onto and off trucks.
• Record art movements and update location information in the collections database.
• Assist with the preparation and installation of lighting in gallery spaces and temporary artist installations.
• Maintain lighting throughout the galleries, including replacing bulbs and adjusting fixtures.
• Assist with the packing/unpacking and documentation of works of art for exhibitions and touring exhibitions.
• Photograph complex packing procedures.
• Ensure documentation and labelling is accurate and complete.
• Notify Registrar, Exhibitions or Supervisor of any change in artwork condition.
• Perform routine maintenance of gallery spaces and installations.
• Maintain work area, tools, and equipment.
• Make recommendations for equipment repairs and/or upgrades.
• Assist with the set-up of art media equipment for exhibitions and temporary artist installations.
• Perform routine troubleshooting of art media installations in gallery spaces.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• 1 to 2 years directly related experience handling and installing works of art.
• Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills.
• Thorough knowledge of installation/hanging methods and devices.
• Directly related knowledge and experience of art handling procedures and methods.
• Demonstrated ability and knowledge of carpentry methods and techniques.
• Demonstrated ability to operate a variety of hand and power tools including table saws, jointers and drills, lift trucks, scissor lift and motor vehicles.
• Working knowledge of applicable computer programs.
• Demonstrated ability to operate audio-visual equipment including repairs and troubleshooting.
