About the Role
Project Guardianship (PG) seeks a smart, flexible, and enthusiastic Staff Attorney to join its legal team. Staff attorneys are the primary legal resource for the Guardianship Services team, providing legal counsel, collaborating with case managers and client finance experts, and participating in case planning to ensure the agency meets its duties as legal guardian. Attorneys passionate about elder and disability health, public benefits, or the public interest, especially those versed in general guardianship law, are encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities
- Oversee legal compliance for a multidisciplinary team serving up to 50 clients.
- Consult with and guide case managers, finance associates, and other staff to address client issues.
- Draft motions and other court papers.
- Appear in court and administrative tribunals for conferences, hearings, and other proceedings.
- Represent clients and/or the agency in guardianship and collateral proceedings.
- Identify and address clients' legal issues as they arise.
- Prepare affirmations detailing services provided to clients.
- Enter relevant case-related information and track case progress in the client database.
- Assist with the preparation of court-mandated and funder-mandated reporting.
- Identify legal and other issues relevant to guardianship and the populations served, and strategize with the Project team to address them.
- Represent the Project at relevant conferences, trainings, and meetings to improve guardianship practices.
- Assist with special projects as required.
Requirements
- J.D. with New York State Bar admission or pending admission.
- Strong interest in social justice for underserved populations.
- Ability to work with a diverse population.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Creativity, flexibility, patience, and good sense of humor.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Ability to work in a team environment.
- Willingness to travel city-wide for appearances and hearings.
- Final candidates will be subject to a criminal background check.
Skills
- Litigation experience is a plus.
