About the Role
The Harm Reduction Specialist provides engagement and support services to program participants around drug and alcohol use, sexual health, and self-harm, utilizing a harm reduction model. The role emphasizes meeting individuals non-judgmentally and providing resources to those engaging in risky behaviors. This position also offers consultation, training, and support to program staff, aiming to lead the agency's commitment to harm reduction services.
Responsibilities
- Assess participant needs for services using the harm reduction model, including outreach, counseling, and education.
- Develop and support strategies to meet the needs of individuals using drugs/alcohol, living with HIV/AIDS, involved in sex work, with diabetes, or at risk for violence.
- Participate in Harm Reduction Committee meetings and contribute to agency-wide projects.
- Provide training and education on the harm reduction model and HIV prevention strategies to staff and participants.
- Coordinate services for assigned program participants.
- Offer recovery-oriented support services and outreach.
- Develop and implement person-centered service plans with participants, including progress review and revisions.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of interactions, services, and contacts.
- Advocate for quality care from external service providers.
- Assist participants in maintaining safe and sanitary living conditions.
- Maintain a resource list and provide referrals for psychiatric, substance use, and health problems.
- Assist participants in identifying and pursuing vocational and educational goals.
- Facilitate conflict resolution for participants.
- Provide outreach to unengaged participants.
- Offer crisis intervention as needed.
- Provide training on skills-building, including assertiveness and self-advocacy.
- Establish and reinforce program/agency standards in all interactions.
- Create or maintain a special project annually with an emphasis on harm reduction.
- Coordinate work orders with operations staff for apartment repairs.
- Attend supervision, meetings, and training sessions.
- Provide holiday, evening, and weekend coverage as necessary.
- Provide coverage for non-assigned participants as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Understanding, appreciation, and commitment to the philosophy and mission of Services for the UnderServed (S:US), with expertise in harm reduction and recovery-oriented services.
- At least two years of experience working within a harm reduction model.
- Thorough understanding of harm reduction.
- Ability to transfer knowledge and skills in engagement, harm reduction, motivational interviewing, and conflict mediation.
- Must be fingerprinted and cleared by the New York State Justice Center.
- Skill in articulating program goals.
- Skilled in conflict mediation/negotiation and assertive problem-solving.
- Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to work as part of a team.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to utilize computer programs, specifically Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Must be creative and flexible.
- Must show initiative and be responsible for follow-through.
- Ability to maintain confidential information.
