About the Role
This role supports the Texas Department of Public Safety (TxDPS) by overseeing the coding, testing, and debugging of programs, leading research for system modifications, and ensuring system performance. The position requires strong technical expertise in application development, database management, and system troubleshooting within a large-scale, team-based environment, with a leadership role in coordinating programming staff and establishing development standards.
Responsibilities
- Oversee coding, testing, and debugging of programs based on system technical and functional requirements.
- Oversee the preparation of test data.
- Oversee the development of, and/or prepare, flowcharts and diagrams.
- Oversee the preparation of, and/or prepare, instructions for use during production runs.
- Coordinate the development of instructions or manuals for end users.
- Lead and coordinate research and analysis for project proposals, software and systems modifications, and new projects.
- Analyze proposed computer applications in terms of equipment requirements and capabilities.
- Evaluate database schemas.
- Write and run SQL code.
- Deploy packages and triggers.
- Review and revise programs to increase operating efficiency or adapt new procedures.
- Analyze logs, system messages, thread connectivity, memory utilization, disk input/output, and disk space to troubleshoot application issues.
- Confer with staff members to schedule work and coordinate programming projects.
- Develop standards and procedures for programming staff, related interfaces, and reports.
- Develop and implement specialized programs to supplement and enhance systems software.
- Recommend, coordinate, and implement changes to improve application and system performance.
Requirements
- 15 years of experience with JAVA.
- 10 years of experience with SQL databases.
- 8 years of experience sustaining and developing large applications in a team environment.
- 5 years of experience with Linux.
- 8 years of experience with the Atlassian tool suite, especially JIRA.
- 8 years of experience with Agile methodology.
- 2 years of experience with State of Texas applications, including experience within the Texas Department of Public Safety environment.
- 2 years of experience transitioning applications from legacy mainframe environments to a Java/SQL environment.
- Must currently live within 50 miles of the Austin, Texas work location.
