About the Role

The Optometric Technician ensures patients receive the highest quality Optometric care during eye exams. This role provides an unsurpassed patient experience by seamlessly linking the doctor and other primary care functions.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with patient care and eye exams, including managing patient records and supporting patient flow.
  • Performs various tests to aid the optometrist with vision examinations, including visual acuity measurements, depth and color perception tests, and retinal imaging.
  • Performs tests to aid the optometrist in accurate diagnosis and treatment within the appropriate timeframe.
  • Reviews prescriptions and/or patient information carefully, identifies special needs, and consults with Optometrists, Opticians, or Practice Managers when necessary.
  • Identifies and resolves situations involving dissatisfied patients promptly.
  • Performs work accurately and thoroughly under time pressure and high patient volume.
  • Handles and files all patient records in an organized and efficient manner, adhering to practice standards and HIPAA.
  • Supports contact lens exams and orders, including contact lens care, trial inventory, and patient orders.
  • Effectively utilizes appointment book/scheduling procedures and computer operations.
  • Operates the point-of-sale system, inputting patient information with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Creates and tenders sales transactions following operational processes and standards when required.
  • Maintains a safe working environment for all team members and patients.
  • Supports compliance of visual merchandising in exam lanes, assessment rooms, and contact lens areas.
  • Adapts to various examination scenarios and is personable with patients and staff.
  • Performs all pre-examination testing with accuracy and attention to detail, explaining measurements and answering patient questions.
  • Responsible for maintenance and disinfection of equipment and provides clinical support to the Optometrist as needed.
  • Works weekends and evenings to support business needs.
  • Adheres to attendance and daily timekeeping requirements.
  • Adheres to all company policies and procedures.
  • Consistently maintains proper dress code.
  • Performs other functions as assigned by Practice Manager or business needs.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • 2+ years’ experience in optometry, ophthalmology or healthcare setting
  • Knowledge of optical and medical terminology
  • Understanding and utilization of optical equipment and diagnostic testing (pre-exam testing, pretesting, visual acuity, etc.)
  • Coaching skills
  • Strong communicator and listening skills

  • Ability to assess priorities, address multiple tasks and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
