About the Role
As a senior engineer, you will help design, build, and safeguard the quality of applications across GM's Product Validation, Safety & Quality IT (PVSQ) organization. You will have the opportunity to work hands-on writing software or solutions, based on detailed requirements and system specifications. You will also coach and mentor software developers, providing feedback and ensuring code alignment with design patterns and frameworks.
Responsibilities
- Design and maintain back-end microservices in Java (Quarkus or Spring Boot), exposing both REST and GraphQL APIs.
- Build responsive front-end features in the Next.js / React portal using TypeScript and Apollo for GraphQL data access.
- Develop and support Databricks data workflows (Unity Catalog, Delta tables, and the medallion pattern).
- Evolve the transactional relational schema (PostgreSQL or Oracle) safely, writing versioned Liquibase changesets.
- Produce clean, well-documented, testable code that aligns with the team's design patterns, frameworks, and standards.
- Conduct thorough code reviews and write unit, integration, and end-to-end tests.
- Diagnose and resolve issues across services, the portal, and data pipelines, using observability tooling.
- Work within the CI/CD pipeline and help keep main releasable at all times.
- Translate business and regulatory requirements into executable development work.
- Lead and drive software design for scalability and reusability across the full stack.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- 7+ years building and shipping production software, with strong recent depth in Java / JVM (Quarkus or Spring Boot).
- Demonstrated full-stack capability: comfortable owning a feature from a Next.js / React / TypeScript front end through a Java service to the data layer.
- Proven ability to take a business requirement all the way to running software.
- Hands-on experience designing and operating RESTful and GraphQL APIs, including contract/versioning discipline and API security best practices.
- Solid experience with a relational database (PostgreSQL or Oracle) behind transactional services, using an ORM, and managing schema changes with a migration tool.
- Working knowledge of data-lakehouse platforms for the analytical/reporting side (Databricks / Delta / Unity Catalog strongly preferred).
- Experience deploying and running services on Azure: containers (Docker), Kubernetes (AKS), and container registries.
- Fluency with Git and GitHub-based CI/CD (GitHub Actions or equivalent).
- Working knowledge of Infrastructure as Code (Terraform) for provisioning and configuration.
- Comfort defining and upholding technical/operational metadata standards, data-movement patterns, and ETL/ELT best practices.
- Comprehensive understanding of the SDLC and experience in Agile / Scrum environments.
- Proven ability to lead development initiatives and drive design decisions, planning and executing deliverables within a collaborative team.
- Independent, self-driven, and quick to learn, with strong, thorough problem-solving.
- Highly organized and effective at managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced setting.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication.
