About the Role
Seeking a strong generalist Software Engineer (Backend) to build production systems and customer integrations that bring AI models into clinical use at scale. This role involves designing and shipping backend services and APIs, building secure integration layers for hospital systems, and ensuring HIPAA compliance. You will work closely with the ML team and own ambiguous, high-impact problems end to end.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and operate backend services and APIs for reliable end-to-end experiences.
- Build and maintain the integration layer connecting applications to customer systems (PACS, RIS, EHRs) using medical communication protocols (DICOM, DICOMweb, HL7, FHIR).
- Design reliable cloud networking for secure customer onboarding, including site-to-site VPNs, and work with customer IT teams.
- Build and operate production data pipelines and storage (ETL, data lake, data warehouse) for imaging and clinical data.
- Build CI/CD and deployment automation for rapid and safe releases.
- Ensure HIPAA compliance for systems handling PHI through encryption, access controls, audit logging, and secure data handling.
- Build model inference pipelines for live and offline traffic, and support ML infrastructure.
- Own large backend projects from design through deployment, leading technical design, driving quality, and setting engineering best practices.
Requirements
- 5+ years as a software engineer with a track record of on-time, high-quality delivery.
- Proficiency in a backend language (Go, Python, Java, or similar).
- Strong experience with cloud platforms and distributed architectures, particularly AWS.
- Strong experience designing and building reliable, scalable, and maintainable backend infrastructure (APIs, data pipelines, services).
- Hands-on experience with schema design and data modeling.
- Experience building and integrating with external or third-party systems, including networking and security concerns.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot complex distributed systems.
- Experience shipping quickly under competing priorities and comfort with ambiguity.
- Excellent communication skills for cross-functional collaboration with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
