About the Role

The Peer Specialist will understand, share, and discuss life experiences such as homelessness and mental illness with participants and the S:US team. Peer Specialists use language to listen, understand, and create space for personal stories of recovery and resilience.

Responsibilities

• Empathize and relate to tenants of all ages, cultures, and backgrounds, disclosing their own recovery story where appropriate.
• Empower tenants to make positive progress towards recovery by connecting them with self-help activities and providing advocacy.
• Adhere to the on-call cell phone system for crisis intervention, emergencies, and other situations requiring immediate action.
• Complete any additional assigned duties given by Program Director, Assistant Program Director, Regional Director, and/or Vice Presidents.
• Make positive and productive progress toward their own recovery.
• Demonstrate good interpersonal communication skills and the ability to empathize with, relate to, and effectively work with participants of mental health services.

Requirements

• Two years of active participation in mental health self-help activities, peer support or peer advocacy programs, participant-run organizations, or similar experiences/programs.
• Must be able to disclose their recovery story (where appropriate) for empowerment.
• Excellent judgment and the ability to understand boundaries when working with participants of mental health services.

Skills

• Basic computer skills (e.g., MS Office suite and Windows)
• Bilingual English/Spanish speaking preferred

Experience Level

• Minimum 2 years of active participation in mental health self-help activities, peer support or peer advocacy programs, participant run organizations or similar experiences or programs required.

Education Level

• HSD or equivalent required
• Peer Certification for NYS OASAS or NYS OMH is a requirement; individuals who are not certified must work towards achieving certification upon employment.
• College or continuing education preferred

Salary/Compensations

• USD $37,000.00/Yr. - USD $40,000.00/Yr.
