About the Role
Mercury is building a complete finance stack for startups, aiming to simplify banking for entrepreneurs. This role involves leading and scaling the operational desks that support the company's payment rails, requiring deep payments knowledge, leadership, and a systems-minded approach to enhance efficiency through process design, tooling, automation, and AI.
Responsibilities
- Lead and develop a Payment Operations team, ensuring clear priorities, strong operating standards, and coaching for excellent work.
- Build and scale payment operations desks across various payment rails, establishing necessary workflows, escalation paths, controls, documentation, and quality standards.
- Apply deep payments expertise to operational decision-making, guiding the team through exceptions, investigations, and partner requirements in a regulated environment.
- Improve operational efficiency via enhanced processes, tooling, automation, AI-enabled workflows, dashboards, and measurement systems.
- Collaborate with Product, Engineering, Compliance, Risk, Banking Partnerships, and other Operations teams to identify bottlenecks and improve workflows.
- Define and track key metrics for payment operations, including productivity, quality, SLA adherence, and exception trends.
- Foster a culture of ownership, urgency, and high quality within the team.
Requirements
- Experience in payments, banking operations, payment operations, business operations, or a related operational function, ideally in a financial institution, bank, fintech, or regulated technology company.
- Deep working knowledge of payment rails (international wires, domestic wires, RTP, ACH, checks), including money movement operations, payment exceptions, operational risk, controls, and supporting systems.
- Experience leading, coaching, or managing an operations team with a proven track record of setting expectations, improving performance, and building team operating rhythms.
- Excitement for making operations more scalable through process improvement, tooling, automation, AI, documentation, dashboards, and measurement.
- Understanding of operating in a regulated environment, balancing speed, customer experience, risk, compliance, and operational quality.
- Clear and calm communication skills, especially in complex, cross-functional, urgent, or sensitive situations.
- High degree of ownership and initiative to identify and improve fragile, unclear, or manual systems.
- Comfort working cross-functionally with Product, Engineering, Compliance, Risk, Banking Partnerships, and other teams.
