About the Role
The Director of Media Relations and Social Media plays a key role in directing and delivering an effective media relations strategy to advance and protect the OMA’s reputation and brand.
Responsibilities
- Lead and inspire a team of earned and social media professionals in developing and executing results-driven strategies.
- Strengthen the organization’s media footprint and advance Ontario doctors as important voices in patient care and health system transformation.
- Lead best-in-class issues and crisis communications activities.
- Develop media relations strategies and oversee their implementation and evaluation.
- Manage external vendors for media relations activities.
- Ensure effective relationships with media representatives, journalists, reporters, and bloggers.
- Respond to media requests and initiate contacts.
- Manage the delivery of information to the media.
- Build rapport with media to facilitate favorable exchanges and attention.
- Provide background information to the media.
- Monitor social media for response requirements.
- Develop key messages and responses for media inquiries.
- Draft news releases, letters to the editor, statements, and emails.
- Organize media briefings.
- Oversee coordination of OMA spokesperson media training.
- Gather detailed background information for spokespeople.
- Develop key messages and statements for spokespeople.
- Ensure spokespeople are properly prepared for interviews and news conferences.
- Schedule and attend media interviews.
- Collaborate with peers and ACM colleagues to develop integrated media relations and social media strategies.
- Identify and implement a social media strategy to increase OMA’s media footprint.
- Ensure OMA’s positions are included in social conversations.
- Lead the development of best-in-class media research practices.
- Monitor health care and political issues in media across the province.
- Determine potential impacts on OMA business activities and strategies.
- Identify opportunities for media coverage and proactive news releases.
- Lead and coach direct reports to position the OMA as the voice of Ontario’s Doctors.
- Hire, train, motivate, and coach employees.
- Assess employee performance and provide constructive feedback and training opportunities.
- Work collaboratively across the organization.
- Build a culture of positivity, collaboration, and cross-functional teamwork among the media team.
- Evaluate progress against planning and delivery of departmental objectives.
Requirements
- Undergraduate degree in journalism, political science, public policy, communications, or marketing disciplines with above Diploma or Certificate.
- 10+ years of media and/or media relations experience.
- 10+ years of communications, interpersonal, leadership, coaching, and conflict resolution skills.
- Experienced compassionate leader capable of developing and growing team members.
- Must be able to work a minimum number of days in the Toronto office.
