About the Role

The Orthodontic Dental Assistant plays an essential role in supporting the orthodontist by delivering exceptional clinical assistance and ensuring a positive patient experience throughout every stage of orthodontic treatment.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare patients for orthodontic treatment while providing exceptional customer service and education.
  • Assist the orthodontist during a variety of orthodontic procedures using four-handed dentistry techniques.
  • Place and remove orthodontic appliances under the direction of the orthodontist, including arch wires, elastics, ligatures, separators, and orthodontic attachments, where permitted by state regulations.
  • Take high-quality digital radiographs, intraoral photographs, and digital impressions/scans.
  • Prepare and maintain treatment rooms, instruments, and materials for orthodontic procedures.
  • Educate patients on proper oral hygiene, appliance care, retainer use, and post-treatment instructions.
  • Maintain accurate patient records and ensure medical histories are updated appropriately.
  • Sterilize instruments and maintain strict infection control standards in accordance with OSHA and CDC guidelines.
  • Monitor inventory and ensure orthodontic materials and supplies are adequately stocked.
  • Coordinate laboratory cases, prepare models, package appliances, and maintain accurate lab logs.
  • Support efficient patient flow by preparing treatment areas before each appointment and ensuring rooms are cleaned and reset afterward.
  • Assist with orthodontic emergencies, appliance repairs, and adjustments as directed by the orthodontist.
  • Perform additional duties and projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduate of an accredited Dental Assistant program.
  • Current Dental Assistant Certification (where applicable).
  • Knowledge of four-handed dentistry.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • Passion for providing exceptional patient care.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Desire to continue learning and growing professionally.
  • Orthodontic assisting experience preferred.
  • At least 2 years of Dental Assistant or Orthodontic Assistant experience.
  • Experience with eClinicalWorks, Dexis, iTero Scanner, and digital orthodontic imaging systems preferred.
  • Familiarity with Invisalign®, clear aligner therapy, and fixed orthodontic appliances.
  • Experience taking digital impressions and orthodontic records.
