About the Role

The York School is seeking a passionate and dedicated Associate Teacher to join its Associate Teacher Development Program, a structured pathway designed to support early-career educators. This program offers hands-on classroom experience and ongoing professional learning to build skills from foundational practice to independent teaching, with mentorship from an experienced teacher and participation in the school’s Growth & Development Program. The role involves supporting teaching and learning in the Middle & Senior School, assisting in classrooms, covering classes, contributing to co-curricular programming, and supervising student activities.

Responsibilities

  • Assist teachers in planning and delivering engaging curriculum in assigned classrooms.
  • Work with small groups and individual students, providing guidance on classwork and projects.
  • Infuse The York School’s mission, vision, and values into all curricular and co-curricular activities.
  • Embrace innovative teaching techniques and technology to enhance the learning experience.
  • Create a positive, engaging teaching and learning environment through effective classroom management practices.
  • Collaborate closely with the IB Coordinator and colleagues within and across sections to ensure a cohesive and integrated approach to teaching and learning.
  • Contribute to student co-curricular and athletic programs as a teacher lead/supervisor or coach.
  • Contribute to student experiential learning by supervising overnight excursions and ensuring a safe, engaging, and educational experience.
  • Participate in supervision duties, staff meetings, and other required engagements.
  • Perform additional job-related responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree, B.Ed. and membership in good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers.
  • Intermediate/Senior qualifications required.
  • Classroom experience an asset, either volunteering or teaching.
  • Training and experience teaching the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) and/or the Diploma Program (DP) is considered an asset.
  • Strong ability to work as part of a collaborative team.
  • Proven ability to work effectively as part of a collaborative, interdisciplinary team, contributing to a positive, inclusive school culture.
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong ability to engage collaboratively with students, parents, and staff, prioritizing a service-oriented approach by ensuring professionalism, respect, and responsiveness in all interactions.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in navigating a technologically rich school environment, with expertise in Google Workspace considered an asset.
  • Successful completion of a criminal record check with vulnerable sector screening.
  • Verification of education and employment history.
  • Satisfactory reference checks.
