About the Role

An Anesthesia Technician supports the anesthesiologist and other anesthesiology personnel by managing and maintaining equipment. This includes sterilizing, cleaning, assembling, calibrating, testing, and troubleshooting machinery, and potentially overseeing equipment monitoring a patient under anesthesia.

Responsibilities

  • Stock carts and surgical suites with required supplies.
  • Assist with difficult airway management by providing equipment support.
  • Assist in the delivery of blood samples to the lab and retrieval of blood products.
  • Disassemble, decontaminate, and sterilize anesthesia equipment and supplies.
  • Report equipment problems to the management team.
  • Stock items in the workroom and maintain a clean and orderly workroom.
  • Perform Point of Care (POCT) testing procedures after initial competency.
  • Effectively communicate with anesthesia and operating room staff to prioritize daily assignments.
  • Transport anesthesia-related equipment and supplies to and from off-site locations.
  • Maintain complete and accurate records and check equipment status.
  • Maintain anesthesia supplies by establishing inventory levels, requisitioning, and restocking.
  • Prepare, test, and set up anesthetic equipment for surgical use.
  • Troubleshoot equipment for problems or repairs and perform preventative maintenance and routine cleaning.
  • Participate in room turnover to minimize downtime between cases.
  • Retrieve and distribute necessary equipment for patient anesthesia preparation, including specialty equipment.
  • Retrieve, carry, and distribute necessary medications to anesthesia providers.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • One year experience working in a healthcare setting OR successful completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program or similar healthcare-related training program
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Science can substitute one year of work experience in healthcare
  • Successful completion of Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within new hire period
  • Direct patient care and/or surgical/OR environment experience (Preferred)
  • Knowledge of medical terminology (Preferred)
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications such as Outlook, Word, Excel, or PowerPoint (Preferred)
  • Clinical background (Preferred)
  • Degree in science (Preferred)
  • Extended periods walking, standing, lifting and carrying equipment (usually not over 20 lbs.).
  • Capable of pushing and maneuvering equipment weighing up to 150 pounds.
  • May be exposed to bodily fluids.
  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
  • Must obtain an influenza vaccination annually or obtain an approved exemption.
