About the Role
Under general supervision, club sport coaches recruit student athletes, assist in scheduling games, conduct practices for the assigned team, and contribute to the educational mission of the University by offering direction and instruction in club sports.
Responsibilities
- Contributes to the educational mission of the University by coordinating the instruction of student-athletes in the sport that they have been assigned to coach.
- Recruits student athletes for the respective club sport program.
- Instructs methods and strategies; coaches student in the sport.
- Provides motivation, both athletic and academic, to student athletes.
- Assists student leaders in scheduling practices and meets.
- Supervises assistant coach/coaches.
- Assists students with team travel and supervises players while traveling.
- Works with team leaders in providing update rosters to the Director of the Kiernan Center.
- Coordinates with team leaders on reporting team scores to the media for home and away games.
- Operates the program under the rules and regulations of the university and league rules.
- Maintains the confidentiality of all confidential and proprietary information.
- Reviews and applies all policies and procedures outlined in the university's Affirmative Action Plan.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
- Instructs, teaches and assists in the development of players during practices.
- Actively coaches team during games/scrimmages.
- Recruits players for the following year and makes scholarship recommendations.
- Transports and supervises players when traveling.
- Provides accurate data to Director of Club Sports about the team and its members.
Requirements
- Knowledge of recruiting techniques and the ability to effectively use them.
- Ability to evaluate potential student athletes during the recruiting process.
- Knowledge of league rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of coaching and teaching techniques and the ability to effectively use them.
- Ability to read and comprehend various forms, documentation, files and information in the department.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to receive telephone calls, respond to inquiries and communicate with others by telephone.
- Basic mathematical skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
- Ability to handle routine office operations (typing, filing, record keeping, etc.).
- Ability to work evenings, weekends and holidays when necessary.
- Ability to travel when necessary.
- Ability to drive a personal or university vehicle for the purpose of university business on a regular basis.
- At least one year of experience in coaching at the high school, college or higher competitive level or at least some experience in participating in the respective sport.
- Valid driver's license required.
- Must take and pass the 'American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer.'
