About the Role
Texas RioGrande Legal Aid (TRLA) seeks a detail-oriented, punctual, self-driven Legal Assistant for its Austin office. This role is crucial for supporting legal services to low-income residents and farm workers across Texas and surrounding states.
Responsibilities
- Type, file, and handle all clerical office matters for assigned casehandlers.
- Maintain client files and applications, completing assigned work within required timeframes.
- Make copies of documents as requested.
- Create files for all new cases.
- Notarize documents.
- Maintain the office law library.
- Communicate with clients and other lawyers as requested.
- Coordinate schedules and maintain case requirements calendars for casehandlers.
- Prepare standard pleadings for attorney review.
- Set hearings, depositions, and other appointments.
- Compose routine correspondence.
- Obtain information from databases and check for conflicts of interest.
- Make appropriate disposition of applications as instructed by an attorney.
- Answer office telephones and take messages.
- Handle incoming and outgoing mail, ensuring timely distribution and mailing.
- Assist with overflow work to ensure smooth office operations.
- Maintain office equipment, including replenishing supplies and responding to breakdowns.
- Maintain office supply inventory and requisition necessary items.
- Maintain trust accounts according to standard accounting procedures.
- Orient new employees on office procedures and brief staff on policy changes.
- Coordinate staff leave and travel arrangements.
- Translate.
- Perform other secretarial duties as requested by the immediate supervisor.
Requirements
- Type a minimum of 45 words per minute.
- Experience with word processing.
- Minimum of two years of secretarial experience.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish.
