About the Role

The Erie County Bar Association Volunteer Lawyers Project (VLP) seeks a full-time Staff Attorney for its Immigration Program in Batavia, NY. This role represents low-income detained individuals facing deportation at the Buffalo Federal Detention Facility.

Responsibilities

  • Handle individual caseload and represent low-income immigrants subject to removal in matters such as habeas petitions before the U.S. District Court for the Western District of New York and petitions for review before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.
  • Represent low-income immigrants subject to removal in appeals before EOIR's Board of Immigration Appeals.
  • May handle matters before EOIR Immigration Courts.
  • Work collaboratively with attorneys, paralegals and social workers and act as an additional resource to them.
  • Maintain case files on VLP's case management system, including case notes updates, opening and closing cases.
  • Engage in special projects/community outreach and education as directed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Admitted to practice in good standing before the U.S. District Court for the Western District of New York.
  • Admitted to practice before the U.S. Court of Appeals of the Second Circuit or ability to gain admission within two months of commencing employment.
  • At least three years' experience in federal litigation, preferably in immigration removal proceedings or related federal litigation.
  • Organizational skills to manage multiple cases efficiently and track/report data accurately.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with staff and supervisors, and independently.
  • Local travel to and from the Buffalo Federal Detention Facility, occasional trips to the Buffalo office and/or U.S. District Courts for the Western District of New York is required.
  • A valid driver's license and regular access to a reliable vehicle are required.
  • Proficiency with legal research software.
  • Proficiency with electronic case management systems (Legal Server preferred), Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, and Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel).
  • A desire for a career in litigation defending low-income immigrants.

Salary/Compensations

  • $77,680 to $95,106
