About the Role
The Development Writer is responsible for leading the development and production of external communications materials for major donors and writing materials to support conservation priorities. This role also involves ghostwriting for the executive team.
Responsibilities
- Write, edit, and design proposals and other materials for donors giving at the $100,000+ level, as well as for smaller donors.
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously and serve as team lead on assigned communication initiatives.
- Accurately interpret and represent budgets and financial reports at various levels.
- Ghostwrite for members of the executive team as needed.
- Utilize a sophisticated understanding of TNC strategies, programs, partnerships, and funding needs.
- Build relationships with fundraisers, finance, and conservation staff, and potentially engage directly with external partners and funders.
- Handle confidential information with sensitivity.
- Coordinate the work of peers in interdepartmental teams.
- Ensure compliance with TNC policies, procedures, and external requirements.
- Work within the scope of program's strategic goals.
- Travel and work overtime as needed.
- Keep up-to-date on market trends, best practices, and knowledge of centrally produced donor communications tools and practices, and global campaign resources.
- Maintain close relationships with marketing and conservation teams to ensure messaging consistency and foster collaboration.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree and 3 years related experience or equivalent combination.
- Experience, coursework, or other training in principles and practices of donor communications or related fields (e.g., journalism, marketing communications).
- Experience writing at least one of the following: newsletter, magazine, annual report, website articles/stories, donor solicitations, funding proposals or reports, campaign brochures, fact sheets, presentations, or equivalent.
- Experience working across teams and with various stakeholders to gather and synthesize information.
- Experience with project management under tight deadlines.
- Proficiency with document management.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to organize time, manage diverse activities, and meet deadlines.
- Understanding of basic accounting practices.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks.
- Must meet the requirements of The Nature Conservancy's background screening process.
