About the Role

This role focuses on engaging participants and families in Harlem/Bronx, promoting awareness of S:US services, and bridging the gap between participants and treatment teams. The Peer Specialist will also be certified to distribute Naloxone kits to combat overdoses.

Responsibilities

• Facilitate engagement by forging strong connections with participants and families.
• Undertake outreach activities to promote community awareness of S:US services.
• Serve as a bridge between treatment team members and participants experiencing ambivalence about substance use treatment.
• Train and distribute Naloxone kits to individuals and their family members.
• Develop authentic, meaningful relationships with individuals and families through empathy and active listening.
• Understand, share, and discuss frameworks for understanding life experiences such as substance use and psychosis.
• Advocate with and for program participants in the community and within the team.
• Collaborate with participants to clarify their personal visions and develop wellness toolkits.
• Support participants in strengthening self-awareness, building life skills, and connecting to resources.
• Positively influence team culture by advocating for clients and promoting a youth-friendly, recovery-oriented approach.
• Maintain open and frequent communication with the team, reporting concerns and keeping notes on visits.
• Co-create reporting with program participants.

Requirements

• Certified Recovery Peer Advocate (or Provisional) Certification required.
• Ideally a candidate who relates well to young people.
• Understanding of the community and available resources.
• Demonstrate progress toward personal recovery.
• Good interpersonal communication skills and ability to empathize with and work with mental health service participants.
• Two years of active participation in substance use/mental health self-help activities, peer support, or advocacy programs.
• Ability/willingness to disclose recovery story for empowerment purposes.
• Excellent judgment and ability to understand boundaries.
• Adhere to on-call cell phone system for crisis intervention and emergencies.
• Significant travel (75%) to engage clients in shelters, community, and other settings.
