About the Role

As a City Inspector, you will make a significant contribution to keeping Westminster’s streets safe, clean, and well-managed. You will act as a visible ambassador for the Council, working on the frontline of our communities. Your role involves balancing engagement, education, and enforcement in various situations.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect licensed venues such as nightclubs, pubs, casinos, gambling premises, and late-night refreshment venues, ensuring compliance with regulations.
  • Tackle environmental issues including waste offences, fly-tipping, and street cleanliness.
  • Respond to noise complaints and anti-social behaviour, managing issues like aggressive begging, street drinking, illegal trading, or pedicabs.
  • Identify and respond to complex or emerging community concerns to maintain public safety and quality of life.
  • Recognise and mitigate risks to the public, educate others on the impact of their actions, and take formal enforcement action when necessary.
  • Gather and record evidence accurately in line with policy.
  • Utilise mobile inspection technology and work flexibly across a 24-hour, 365-day service, including evenings, nights, and weekends.
  • Act as the face of the Council in the community and be part of a dedicated team.

Requirements

  • Experience working with customers, building trusted relationships, and resolving conflicts calmly.
  • Confidence in engaging with residents and businesses.
  • Ability to listen carefully to different viewpoints to influence behaviour and secure positive outcomes.
  • Comfort in responding to complaints in person and in writing.
  • Clear, accurate, and empathetic communication skills.
  • Experience working collaboratively with a wide range of agencies and professionals.
  • Ability to assess situations quickly and make sound judgments based on public risk.
  • Strong organisational skills and ability to manage workload independently.
  • Understanding of the importance of evidence gathering and accurate information recording.
  • Proficiency in using IT and mobile technology for recording information and completing tasks.
  • Resilience to carry out duties in all weather conditions.
  • Exceptional transferable skills.
  • Eagerness to develop through training and formal qualifications.
  • Calm, professional, and community-focused demeanour.
