About the Role

The Youth Mental Health Court Worker provides assessment, referral, and case management for youth involved in the Youth Justice Court system. This role establishes linkages between the youth, the court, and community resources, and makes recommendations to the Crown Attorney regarding youth suitability for the court and treatment plans.

Responsibilities

  • Incorporate a trauma-informed, strengths-based, relationship-based philosophy of care and a belief in the resilience of youth into work.
  • Complete criminogenic risk needs assessments and mental health screening and assessments.
  • Provide assessment and brief counseling, promoting youth and family engagement.
  • Promote an environment of inclusion that fosters equity and respects diversity.
  • Collaborate within a multi-disciplinary team to provide services to youth and their families.
  • Lead the development of service/treatment plans for youth.
  • Oversee the maintenance of client files to ensure the integrity of clinical information.
  • Ensure client records are maintained according to agency standards and privacy policies.
  • Complete administrative duties within required timeframes.
  • Effectively utilize communication systems for client and program information.
  • Represent the Agency professionally when interacting with families, external professionals, the public, and community partners.
  • Participate actively in team meetings.
  • Participate in ongoing training and supervision sessions.
  • Participate in all mandatory training provided by the Agency.
  • Work in accordance with all Agency policies and procedures.
  • Identify opportunities and make recommendations regarding clinical and counseling services, systems, policies, and procedures.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Social Work, Clinical Psychology, or Counselling.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience working with adolescents, preferably in the youth justice system.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience providing evidence-informed interventions with youth with acute mental health and substance abuse issues (trauma-informed philosophy of service).
  • Strong clinical assessment skills and brief counseling skills.
  • Knowledge of mental health diagnosis and effective treatments.
  • Demonstrated ability to work from and implement a strengths-based, relationship-based approach.
  • Understanding of the YCJA and complex criminogenic risks and needs facing young people involved in the court.
  • Sensitivity to and ability to work with a diverse client and staff group.
  • Capacity to develop and nurture strong working relationships within the youth justice system and community.
  • Previous experience working in the youth justice system and/or children's mental health system.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Ability to resolve issues with supervisors and co-workers respectfully and cooperatively.
  • Ability to exercise professionalism and sound judgment in conflictual and crisis situations.
  • Strong case management, administrative, and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of relevant community resources and strong networking skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, conflict resolution, and communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Valid First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Completion of required crisis intervention training.
  • Registration and good standing with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers and/or College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario.
