About the Role

Assists providers during exams and performs a variety of clinical tasks in support of patient care in out-patient clinics, including technical, procedural, and information systems tasks affecting patient comfort, care, and safety.

Responsibilities

  • Assists provider during exam, anticipating needs and adapting to patient complexity.
  • Attaches patients to diagnostic and medical equipment.
  • Provides information, comfort, and care to patients during exams.
  • Ensures supplies and equipment are readily available for smooth operations and patient safety.
  • Gives patients provider's pre-printed discharge instructions.
  • Anticipates and ensures the correct number and type of supplies are available in each exam room.
  • Ensures equipment/supplies are available for providers based on individual preference.
  • Responsible for efficient room utilization and minimizing patient wait time.
  • Escorts patients from waiting area to exam areas.
  • Obtains vital signs.
  • Performs diagnostic testing and specimen collection per provider order.
  • Accurately labels, logs, and processes specimens according to protocol.
  • Enters patient data, condition, and care given into electronic medical record system.
  • Performs administrative duties as assigned, including scheduling and registration.
  • Maintains adequacy of clinical equipment and medical supply levels.
  • Conducts inventory of supplies, rotates inventory, monitors expiration dates, requisitions needed supplies, reconciles orders, and tracks utilization.
  • Makes recommendations regarding opportunities to decrease cost in use of equipment and supplies.
  • Interacts and solves problems with the purchasing department when products are on back order.
  • Implements standard infection prevention measures.
  • Monitors infection prevention practices for breaches and suggests/initiates corrections.
  • Precepts new employees to the area with RN oversight.
  • May assist providers with patient processes as a surgical procedure assistant.
  • Prepares room and instrumentation for procedures.
  • Provides standard, basic instruction to patients regarding procedures.
  • Anticipates provider needs during procedures, obtains additional instrumentation, prepares specimens, and dresses wounds.
  • Checks and calibrates equipment according to protocol.
  • Sets up sterile fields as required.
  • Preps instrument trays for procedures.
  • Sterilizes instruments.
  • Prepares specimens in appropriate preservative medium and labels appropriately.
  • Ensures accuracy for all requisitions and verifies all specimens are labeled and logged correctly.
  • Reviews discharge instructions with patients as prepared by provider.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent and 1 year experience in a customer-focused/service setting required.
  • Associate's degree preferred.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience accepted.

Skills

  • Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical procedures preferred.
  • Computer experience preferred.
