About the Role
The Labor & Employee Relations unit of the NYC Housing Authority's Law Department advises on progressive discipline and represents NYCHA in disciplinary proceedings. This role involves investigating employee disciplinary matters, gathering evidence, representing the Authority in various legal proceedings, and providing legal analysis and counsel.
Responsibilities
- Investigate potential employee disciplinary matters and draft disciplinary charges.
- Interview witnesses and gather relevant documents in preparation for trials.
- Represent the Authority in employee disciplinary proceedings, settlement conferences, or disability hearings.
- Research and draft legal memoranda.
- Represent the Authority in appeals before the NYC Civil Service Commission.
- Provide legal analysis, advice, and counsel to Human Resources and other Departments.
- Represent the Authority before administrative agencies or in State or Federal court.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding all NYCHA proceedings.
Requirements
- Admission to the New York State Bar.
- One year of satisfactory United States legal experience subsequent to admission to any state bar.
- Six months of satisfactory service as an Agency Attorney Interne (30086).
- Must remain a Member of the New York State Bar in good standing for the duration of employment.
- To be assigned to Assignment Level (AL) II, candidates must have one year of experience at Assignment Level I or two years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment.
- To be assigned to AL III candidates must have two years of experience in Assignment Levels I and/or II or three years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment.
- Resume and cover letter must include bar admission date(s) (month and year).
- Provide two writing samples representing the candidate’s efforts.
- Provide three references, listing their professional association and the circumstances under which they became familiar with the candidate’s professional skills.
- Provide a copy of law school transcript.
- NYCHA employees applying for transfer, promotion, title or level change opportunities must have served a period of one year at current location and in current title and level (if applicable).
