About the Role

The Kitchen Assistant will be responsible for assisting with the distribution, service, and clean-up of the meal program, supporting the mission of providing safe, affordable senior housing with compassionate property management and supportive services.

Responsibilities

  • Cleaning food service areas, including equipment, kitchen, storage, and dining areas.
  • Performing dishwashing, pot washing, and other assigned cleaning duties.
  • Assisting with meal service distribution and setup, including food preparation following food safety procedures.
  • Accepting food deliveries and ensuring proper storage according to health regulations.
  • Participating in labeling, dating, and rotating stock.
  • Meeting with supervisors to discuss food service procedures and best practices.
  • Working as a team member to maintain a high level of care, respect, and communication with residents.
  • Cooperating with all staff and kitchen team members.
  • Sharing resident progress, needs, and problems with appropriate staff.
  • Attending required training sessions and conferences.
  • Implementing emergency procedures as necessary.
  • Working independently when required.

Requirements

  • Previous experience in a commercial kitchen.
  • Ability to prepare nutritious and appealing meals.
  • Ability to follow kitchen procedures and protocols.
  • Proficient written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational ability, time management, and interpersonal skills.
  • Team-focused attitude and ability to work effectively with others.
  • Desire or interest in working with and supporting senior residents.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to climb stairs.
  • Must be able to lift at least 25lbs.

Experience Level

  • 6-month experience as a Kitchen Assistant or Dishwasher role
  • Proven cooking experience in a commercial kitchen(s) serving twenty persons or more

Education Level

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • In lieu of GED, must have at least 4 years of relevant industry cooking/kitchen experience
  • Active food handler's certification from the City of New York
