About the Role
KPMG Law LLP is seeking a professional to join their Tax Litigation & Dispute Resolution team. This role involves actively participating in all stages of the dispute process, collaborating with colleagues, and assisting clients throughout their journey. The ideal candidate is motivated, thrives in a dynamic environment, and takes initiative to drive tasks and projects forward.
Responsibilities
- Draft responses to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), assist with and prepare supporting documentation
- Prepare correspondence and draft legal documents such as lists of documents, affidavits, undertakings charts, transcript summaries, and other documentation
- Prepare and file court-related materials, including Books of Documents, Books of Authorities, and motion materials
- Coordinate and assist with preparation for meetings, discoveries, trials, and other related tasks
- Attend and provide support at discoveries, hearings, and client meetings
- Communicate with clients, the Canada Revenue Agency (or other tax authorities), courts, and related parties, maintaining professionalism and a client-focused approach
- Perform e-Discovery tasks, including maintaining workspaces, assisting with document review and production, objective coding, and workflow development
- Handle file and case management tasks, including organizing materials, tracking deadlines, and proactively identifying next steps
- Contribute to the refinement of best practices for the paralegal/law clerk role, including offering input on process improvements and staying informed on updates to Court Rules, Acts, and related legislative or procedural changes
Requirements
- Paralegal degree/diploma, law clerk diploma, or equivalent qualification with law clerk or paralegal experience
- A minimum of 3 years of Law Clerk/Paralegal experience
- Experience in litigation (tax disputes is considered an asset)
- Basic understanding of various Court Rules, Guidelines, Practice Directions (the Tax Court of Canada Rules and Federal Courts Rules is considered an asset)
- Exposure to motions, discoveries, and trial preparation
- Familiarity with document review processes and assisting with affidavits of documents
- Working knowledge of e-Discovery platforms such as Relativity, Ringtail/Nuix, or similar tools
