About the Role

National Grid is at the heart of the energy system's transformation towards net zero by 2050. The Group Strategy, Innovation and Market Analytics (SIMA) team leads on strategic questions for National Grid and the wider industry. We are seeking a proactive energy market analyst with strong knowledge of the UK energy retail sector or energy commodity markets to conduct in-depth analyses, model scenarios, and quantify risks and opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide commentary and insight on the European and global gas commodity markets.
  • Shape and influence group long-term forecasts for European gas and carbon prices.
  • Contribute to outlooks for low carbon technologies, particularly hydrogen, for use in scenarios.
  • Lead the delivery of insight into the impacts of energy market changes on consumer bills.
  • Lead the development and continuous improvement of Market Analytics’ in-house models.
  • Deliver clear, decision-focused insights to senior stakeholders, synthesizing complex market and modelling outputs.
  • Drive cross-functional collaboration across National Grid, working closely with various teams.
  • Mentor and develop junior analysts, building team capability in modelling, insight generation, and stakeholder engagement.

Requirements

  • Strong stakeholder engagement and influencing skills, with the ability to build trusted relationships and work collaboratively.
  • Proven ability to translate complex modelling outputs into clear, decision-ready insights for senior stakeholders.
  • Highly self-motivated, proactive and intellectually curious, with a track record of taking ownership and driving improvements independently.
  • Strong understanding of GB and/or European energy markets.
  • Deep expertise in global gas markets or the UK energy retail market is highly advantageous.
  • Excellent quantitative, analytical and modelling skills, with experience working with large datasets and applying statistical or advanced analytical techniques.
  • Familiarity with power market modelling tools (e.g. PLEXOS, Aurora, BID3) and an appreciation of how modelling supports scenario development, forecasting, and commercial decision-making is preferred.
  • Experience in data visualisation and insight communication, using tools such as Power BI (or similar).
