About the Role

Questrade Financial Group (QFG) is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to lead solution design, drive architectural decisions, and write code. This hands-on role involves working alongside senior and principal engineers, owning solutions from design to production, and utilizing AI tools daily to enhance productivity and quality. The position requires translating business problems into executable technical strategies and collaborating closely with product leads.

Responsibilities

Own the full stack, define how it's built, and build it yourself.
Lead solution design and drive architectural decisions.
Write the code that ships.
Work alongside other senior and principal engineers as peers.
Design, code, and own solutions in production.
Work in-person with engineers and product leads to translate requirements into technical strategies.
Surface trade-offs early and keep solutions aligned with product direction.
Collaborate with other senior and principal engineers to align on architecture and share ownership.
Hold each other to a high bar.
Lead design and architectural reviews.
Produce technical documentation.
Hold yourself to a high bar from first design to production.
Use AI tools like Cursor or Claude as part of your daily workflow to accelerate coding, design thinking, reviews, and documentation.
Look for ways to go faster without cutting corners.
Facilitate technical discovery and define system boundaries.
Produce architecture artifacts that the team can build confidently against.
Make hard technical calls across back-end, web, and mobile, then implement them yourself in TypeScript.
Translate business problems into architectures.

Requirements

Active daily use of AI development tools like Cursor or Claude is a hard requirement.
10+ years of professional software engineering experience with a track record of leading technical initiatives.
Demonstrated experience leading solution design for complex systems: facilitating architecture sessions, producing design documentation, and driving teams from ambiguity to executable plans.
Strong hands-on command of TypeScript.
React and React Native experience (or a documented history of picking up frameworks fast).
Deep practical knowledge of Domain-Driven Design (DDD) and Event-Driven Architecture (EDA) in production, backed by strong object-oriented (OOP) fundamentals.
Ability to communicate technical decisions clearly to both engineers and product leads.
Comfortable with in-person collaboration in North York three days per week.
Experience with Angular or C# / .NET Core (additional kudos).
Experience with real-time technologies like WebSockets, gRPC, or Firebase (additional kudos).
Hands-on with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) (additional kudos).
Complex query experience in analytical databases like BigQuery or Bigtable (additional kudos).
Contributions to open-source or a portfolio that demonstrates architectural thinking (additional kudos).
