About the Role
Questrade Financial Group (QFG) is seeking a Principal Data Scientist to join the Alternative Investments Team within the Growth Portfolio. This role will be instrumental in launching new crypto and alternative product capabilities by implementing and maintaining data flows, building compliance-grade reporting, establishing dashboards, and enabling self-serve analytics. The ideal candidate will leverage AI to transform customer experiences and empower teams, operating in a high-visibility, high-impact environment that fosters innovation and disruption.
Responsibilities
- Build and operate daily reconciliation and supervision/surveillance reporting flows for crypto, derivatives, and precious metals products.
- Ensure reporting outputs are reliable, traceable, and delivered via approved secure mechanisms.
- Ingest, model, and curate core datasets in BigQuery.
- Define metric definitions with clear grains and ownership.
- Execute the full lifecycle from data pipeline to shipped dashboard using appropriate tools like Looker, Grafana, or PyShiny.
- Build and maintain queryable tables/views, documentation, and examples for self-serve analytics.
- Write and ship production code, collaborating on shared codebases via Git.
- Deploy code through CI/CD pipelines and monitor services on scalable infrastructure (GKE/Kubernetes).
- Engage directly with compliance, ops, product, and business leaders to understand needs and deliver solutions.
- Automate recurring workflows and operational load.
- Utilize AI to draft pipelines, generate tests, explore data faster, and prototype solutions.
- Shape direction and work with legacy systems when necessary, with a baseline of BigQuery, Looker, and Python microservices in GKE.
Requirements
- Strong SQL and Python skills.
- Track record of owning production data pipelines and analytics outputs end-to-end.
- Experience with modern cloud data analytics platforms (GCP/BigQuery, Databricks, Snowflake, etc.).
- Strong data modeling instincts and ability to create stable metric definitions.
- Experience building and evolving dashboards.
- Production software engineering experience, including Git, CI/CD, and container orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes/GKE).
- Comfort operating in regulated environments with strong privacy/PII awareness and auditability discipline.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
- High autonomy, ability to prioritize, ship thin slices, and navigate enterprise constraints.
