About the Role

The Adult English Language and Literacy (AELL) Intake Advisor plays a crucial role in facilitating free ESOL and adult literacy instruction for The New York Public Library. This position involves recruiting, assessing, and supporting adult patrons to help them achieve their long-term goals and overcome barriers to program participation.

Responsibilities

  • Provide case management services to students, including running information sessions, organizing intake appointments, assessments, NRS goal setting, and class placement or referral.
  • Monitor student progress and conduct daily follow-ups with students experiencing attendance issues to encourage program continuation.
  • Input student data into agency databases, including personal contact information, assessment results, attendance, and educational/employment outcomes.
  • Test all students at the end of each cycle.
  • Maintain paper record files for each student as per NYSED requirements.
  • Conduct outreach to city and non-profit agencies to increase student enrollment, build community partnerships, and expand the referral list for supplemental services.
  • Connect adult students with needed community resources and follow up with clients and agencies to document referral success.
  • Provide workshops on technology usage and orientations to library services.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in education, English, literacy or a related field.
  • Certification in Best Plus and TABE (required within the first 3 months of employment).
  • At least 1 year of administrative and/or instructional experience working with non-native English speaking adult learners.
  • Proficiency with data entry and utilization of various databases.
  • Knowledge of community resources and counseling/social services for high needs populations.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Drive.
  • Proficiency in navigating and leading meetings on Zoom.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work with culturally-diverse communities.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Supervise 1 hourly Student Mentor.

  • Ability to lift laptop computers, textbooks, and projectors up to 20 pounds.
  • Travel within NYC (Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island) required.

Work Type

  • 35 hours per week
  • Minimum of 2 late nights per week
  • Saturdays as required

Experience Level

Salary/Compensations

  • $60,000 - $62,000 / year

  • Professional teachers facilitate free instruction to adult patrons in reading, writing, speaking, and listening from a 0 to 8th-grade level in both in-person and online classes.
  • AELL expands ESOL instruction at NYPL through formal classes and elective offerings like English conversation and citizenship preparation groups.
  • Instruction is offered in three, 10-week cycles and one, 4-week summer cycle.
