About the Role

As a CDL Driver, you will play an essential role in supporting JASA's mission by providing safe, reliable, and compassionate transportation services for older adults. You will operate agency vehicles, including 12-passenger and 18-passenger buses, to transport program participants to and from scheduled trips, activities, and services while ensuring their safety, comfort, and overall experience.

Responsibilities

  • Safely operate assigned agency vehicles, including 12-passenger and 18-passenger buses, to transport program participants to and from scheduled trips.
  • Utilize a valid New York State Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) to operate agency passenger vehicles in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
  • Ensure the comfort, safety, and well-being of all passengers during transportation.
  • Assist participants as needed when boarding and exiting vehicles.
  • Communicate with participants regarding scheduled trips, transportation needs, and follow-up information.
  • Maintain a professional, courteous, and respectful approach when interacting with older adults.
  • Maintain assigned buses in a safe, clean, and operational condition at all times.
  • Perform routine vehicle inspections, including checking fluid levels, tires, safety equipment, and emergency supplies.
  • Ensure vehicles are equipped with required emergency equipment, including spare tire, jack, and other necessary supplies.
  • Arrange for fuel and oil purchases according to agency procedures.
  • Change tires and perform minor vehicle maintenance tasks when necessary.
  • Complete and maintain accurate trip tickets, mileage records, and other required transportation documentation.
  • Follow all traffic laws, CDL requirements, transportation regulations, and agency safety procedures.
  • Maintain a safe driving record and immediately report accidents, vehicle concerns, or traffic violations to the supervisor.
  • Ensure safe operation of agency vehicles at all times.
  • Exercise sound judgment when responding to transportation-related situations.
  • Collect participant contributions, issue receipts, and accurately account for collected funds according to agency procedures.
  • Immediately notify the Program Director or designee of unusual situations or concerns involving participants.
  • Assist with meal preparation, serving, and program setup at the center as needed.
  • Enter transportation and program-related information into the NYC Aging electronic database.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent preferred.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of professional driving experience required.
  • Experience operating passenger buses or CDL-required vehicles preferred.
  • Experience transporting older adults, individuals with disabilities, or community members preferred.
  • Must have no more than one moving violation within the last two years.
  • No history of driving while intoxicated (DWI) convictions.
  • Must be available to work extended hours during weekdays or weekends as needed for cooling center hours, make-up days, or emergency responses.
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects.
  • Ability to climb stairs and assist participants as needed.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and remain physically active for extended periods.
  • Ability to safely operate passenger buses and assist participants with mobility needs.

Skills

  • Knowledge of safe passenger transportation practices.
  • Ability to safely operate CDL-required passenger vehicles.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English clearly.
  • Ability to relate effectively and empathetically with older adults.
  • Dependable, punctual, and safety-focused.
  • Ability to work independently while following established procedures.
