About the Role

The Nurse Practitioner provides general women's health care throughout a woman's lifespan, from adolescence through post-menopause. Responsibilities include recording patient medical histories, performing physical exams, ordering tests, managing therapy, prescribing, referring, and promoting women's health. The role also involves providing gynecologic, family planning, and low-risk obstetrical care, including postpartum care.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain patient health histories and complete physical examinations, documenting findings.
  • Order and interpret appropriate diagnostic and laboratory tests.
  • Explain the necessity, preparation, nature, and anticipated effects of procedures to patients, families, and staff.
  • Perform approved therapeutic procedures based on patient's clinical status.
  • Document patient preparation and response to procedures.
  • Assist other clinical office professionals when necessary.
  • Collaborate with physician colleagues and document in medical records and appropriate narrative summaries.
  • Provide patient and family education related to prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, and interconception care.
  • Utilize current research and evidence-based decision-making in all clinical practice.
  • Perform and participate in quality/performance improvement activities.
  • Role model advanced practice professional nursing through conduct, appearance, communication, mutual respect, leadership, ethical decision-making, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Obtain MD consultation as appropriate within scope of practice guidelines.
  • Demonstrate responsibility for professional practice through active participation in professional organizations and continuing education.
  • Maintain continuing education as mandated by certifying body.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Midwifery, Public Health/Nursing, Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner.
  • Licensure as Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner or Midwife by the NYS Department of Education.
  • Board Certified by the National Certification Corporation or American College of Nurse Midwives.
  • Minimum of two years of women’s health experience required.
  • BLS and NRP Certification required.
  • Successful completion of an approved electronic fetal monitoring course within two years.
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • RN, BSN required.
  • Knowledge of OB/GYN clinical practice policy and procedures.
  • Knowledge of EMR and health care delivery system.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Focus on quality care and patient satisfaction.
