About the Role

The Recycling Specialist will collect, organize, and process recyclable materials and products for various University locations. This position is physically demanding and requires regular outdoor work.

Responsibilities

  • Collect and transport heavy bales of papers, bottles, cans, pallets, electronics & E-Waste, food service organics, steel, and aluminum from Campus buildings and other areas.
  • Service recyclables once to twice a week or more frequently as needed.
  • Move, push, and/or lift filled 95-gallon paper Toter Recycling Bins and Trash Bins, 18-bushel capacity Canvas Recycling Bins, and Recycling Tilt Trucks to appropriate disposal areas.
  • Sort, shred, and bale paper and cardboard by hand, removing contaminants.
  • Collect pallets and load them into a trailer by hand.
  • Collect bottles, cans, and other recyclable materials on Campus and remove contaminants.
  • Clean and sanitize heavy 95-gallon bins/containers and return them to service.
  • Provide general housekeeping for the recycling processing area, loading dock areas, and material handling paths.
  • Perform general housekeeping which may include bending, lifting heavy materials, shoveling, sweeping, cleaning, and using cleaning chemicals.
  • Help maintain the South P Materials Recycling and Handling Area and truck scale through routine maintenance and general housekeeping.
  • Maintain records of bin pickups and servicing, ensuring neatness, accuracy, and timely submission.
  • Weigh all materials accurately and document weighed materials being removed by service provider(s).
  • Move and lift heavy materials by hand when weighing.
  • Submit receipts and records to the Supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Operate powered forklifts, down-stroke vertical balers, bucket loaders, and box trucks.
  • Help maintain the packer truck a minimum of twice a month.
  • Remove heavy surplus/scrap materials when assigned.
  • Perform other duties or projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must be physically able to perform heavy physical labor, including pulling, pushing, filling, and lifting trash bins, recycling containers, and pallets.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Must possess, maintain, and keep an appropriate valid Class B NYS Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brakes.
  • Must participate in the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act (drug and alcohol testing) as required.
  • Must have a motor vehicle record free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations.
  • Must be able to work outside year-round in all types of weather.
  • Incumbent must continuously maintain a valid CDL license and NYS driver's license.
  • The selected candidate must successfully clear a background investigation.

  • Out-of-State Applicants: Must obtain a NYS driver's license within 30 days of the official start date.
