About the Role
Leads Sutter Health's artificial intelligence (AI) governance program, setting the target operating model, policy framework, and program priorities. This role shapes how AI governance is performed and evolves within a dynamic regulatory, technical, and organizational landscape. You will lead a team of AI governance analysts, conduct high-complexity reviews, draft policy and standards, and make day-to-day prioritization decisions for a high-volume queue of AI use cases. This position requires close partnership with data science and applied AI leadership to integrate governance requirements throughout the model development and monitoring lifecycle.
Responsibilities
- Sets the target operating model, policy framework, and program priorities for AI governance.
- Leads a team of AI governance analysts.
- Conducts high-complexity reviews.
- Drafts policy and standards for AI governance.
- Makes day-to-day prioritization decisions across a high-volume queue of AI use cases.
- Convenes and aligns diverse groups for AI governance.
- Partners closely with data science and applied AI leadership.
- Integrates governance requirements across the model development and monitoring lifecycle.
- Designs and operates practical, auditable governance processes that minimize friction for delivery teams.
- Manages team capacity, prioritization, and delivery across a high-volume, multi-stakeholder portfolio.
- Coaches and develops staff in technical and governance/regulatory domains.
Requirements
- Equivalent experience will be accepted in lieu of the required degree or diploma.
- Experience in healthcare data governance, AI/ML governance, model risk management, or regulatory compliance.
- Experience leading or coordinating cross-functional governance, risk, or compliance programs.
- Direct experience supporting AI/ML or advanced analytics programs.
- Strong organization and prioritization skills across a large, varied portfolio of work and competing demands.
- Demonstrated ability to convene, align, and drive decisions among diverse stakeholder groups, including clinical, technical, legal, privacy, security, compliance, and operational.
- Demonstrated ability to manage team capacity, prioritization, and delivery across a high-volume, multi-stakeholder portfolio.
- Experience coaching and developing staff in both technical and governance/regulatory domains.
Skills
- Strong organization and prioritization skills
- Ability to convene, align, and drive decisions among diverse stakeholder groups
- Working knowledge of machine learning and generative AI concepts
- Understanding of the model development lifecycle
- Knowledge of common AI failure modes (bias, drift, hallucination, data leakage)
- Understanding of technical concepts related to AI observability
- Familiarity with advanced monitoring techniques for AI
- Familiarity with AI governance frameworks (NIST AI RMF, CHAI Assurance Standards, ISO/IEC 42001)
- Familiarity with healthcare regulations (HIPAA, FDA SaMD guidance, ONC HTI-1 rule)
- Familiarity with emerging state-level AI regulation
- Demonstrated ability to design and operate governance processes
- Strong facilitation skills
- Strong written communication skills
- Ability to lead committees
- Ability to translate complex AI risk concepts for various audiences
