About the Role
Under general supervision, the School Crossing Guard assists elementary and middle school students, children, youth, and other pedestrians in crossing streets safely before and after school. This is a part-time, temporary exempt position.
Responsibilities
- Guides students and other pedestrians at intersections and holds them from crossing until it is safe.
- Holds traffic at designated intersections using mechanical or hand signals to permit safe crossing.
- Escorts students through intersections when appropriate.
- Instructs students, children, youth, parents, teachers, bicyclists, motorists, and staff in safety elements.
- Observes and reports traffic issues and unusual incidents related to pedestrian safety and student welfare.
- Reports students disobeying instructions to the school principal and/or School Crossing Guard staff.
- Communicates with students, children, youth, pedestrians, teachers, bicyclists, motorists, and the general public.
- Remains alert to surroundings and vehicles.
- Takes quick action to physically avoid traffic hazards for crossing pedestrians and themselves.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Must be available to work a morning shift and an afternoon shift, approximately 1.25 hours per shift, totaling about 2.5 hours per day (12.5 hours per week).
- Shift times are between 7:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., five days a week.
- Assigned work locations and hours may change to meet program needs.
- Requires good physical condition including sight, hearing, and agility.
- Requires continuous and unassisted standing and walking for extended periods in all weather conditions.
- Requires stepping up and down curbs.
- Requires lifting and carrying a handheld stop sign with wind pressure.
- Requires wearing a specialized uniform and weather gear.
- Requires clear communication.
- Requires being timely, dependable, and professional.
- Requires continuous face-to-face contact and communication with various groups.
- Must meet minimum qualifications by the final filing date.

Skills
- Knowledge of traffic laws, particularly those related to pedestrian right-of-way and speed limits in school-crossing areas.
- Knowledge of traffic safety elements for motorists and pedestrians.
