About the Role
This position is responsible for supporting, coordinating, and monitoring all program-related activities within the Long Island & New York City Regions, including program development and administration of training, competition, communication, education, recruitment, and safety for Special Olympic athletes and volunteers.
Responsibilities
- Implement and monitor all program-related operational procedures, including accounting and annual budget/planning.
- Build, structure, and monitor all program and training club activities.
- Support all Special Olympics activities related to training, volunteer education, and new initiatives.
- Ensure adherence to all program-related SONY minimum standards.
- Act as the knowledgeable authority on sports training, athletic competition, and coach education.
- Provide assistance and support in planning and implementing competitions in Long Island and New York City Regions.
- Serve as project leader for smaller competitions in Long Island and New York City Regions.
- Provide support in executing major and/or signature events in Long Island and New York City Regions.
- Recruit and maintain relationships with key stakeholders and volunteers in leadership positions.
- Assist in identifying individuals or groups to secure competition facilities.
- Distribute and share educational materials to officials, sports directors, and coaches, ensuring understanding of updated rules, regulations, and protocols.
- Maintain budget and financial records of all expenses.
- Ensure the Region complies with all regulations, general rules, and policies from SONY, Inc., Special Olympics International, and other governing bodies.
- Engage and collaborate with athlete leaders and Health Messengers to support health initiatives.
- Prioritize Inclusion, Unified Sports, and Unified Champion School programming within seasonal and annual calendars and activities.
- Perform other duties as assigned by management.
Requirements
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with volunteers, professionals, and business people from various socio/economic backgrounds.
- Thorough understanding of the structure, function, and mission of Special Olympics New York, including sports training, competition, and program at local, regional, state, and national levels.
- Operating knowledge of budgeting, fund-raising, and public relations.
- Advanced computer, clerical, and organizational skills.
- A valid Driver’s License.
- Position requires working both standing and sitting.
- Must be able to lift and carry light loads (5-30 pounds for short distances).

Experience Level

Education Level
- Bachelor Degree from an accredited college/university in Physical Education, Sports Management, Recreation, Special Education, and/or related field or equivalent is desired.
- Experience working or volunteering in the field of Developmental Disabilities as a professional coach and/or Special Olympics volunteer is preferred.
- Familiarity with New York City boroughs and Long Island neighborhoods a plus.
Salary/Compensations
- $67,000 - $72,000
