About the Role
The Toronto Star is seeking a driven, creative, and collaborative editor to join its newsroom. This role is for a seasoned journalist with a restless curiosity, capable of generating story ideas and guiding reporters to produce ambitious work across various beats and subject areas.
Responsibilities
- Generate and champion story ideas across news, features, and enterprise, bringing fresh angles and under-told perspectives to planning.
- Coach reporters through the editorial process, focusing on skill-building and confidence.
- Assign and develop stories with consideration for audience, impact, and editorial priorities, ensuring diverse representation.
- Shape stories by collaborating with reporters on pitches and outlines, asking questions to refine focus.
- Edit copy with rigor and speed, upholding journalistic standards for accuracy, fairness, and clarity.
- Identify optimal formats for stories (text, video, audio, photography, social) and collaborate with multimedia teams.
- Contribute to digital planning, including SEO-aware packaging, headline writing, and mobile-first presentation.
Requirements
- Significant experience as a journalist or editor at a daily news organization with a track record of strong journalism.
- Proven ability to generate compelling story ideas and manage them through to publication.
- Deep skill in coaching and developing reporters.
- Strong line-editing abilities and structural instincts.
- Fluency across formats, including digital text, social, video, and audio.
- Excellent news judgment and commitment to accuracy, with the ability to work calmly under deadlines.
- Collaborative spirit and ability to work across departments.
- Familiarity with analytics tools and understanding of reader engagement drivers.
- Commitment to including underrepresented communities in storytelling.
