About the Role

Gusto is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join the Benefits Renewals team. This role involves working across the full product lifecycle, from feature conception and design to launch and iteration. You will write frontend code, build backend APIs, influence product direction, and own features post-launch. The team powers workflows that guide employers and employees through the benefits renewal process, ensuring compliance and optimal coverage.

Responsibilities

Design, build, and test products in Benefits.
Improve the user experience for renewing benefits for external and internal customers.
Automate complex manual processes in health insurance to reduce errors and save time.
Mentor other engineers to solve complex technical problems at scale.
Help scale one of the largest Ruby/Rails and Javascript/React applications globally.
Collaborate with Product Management, Data, Design, and Platform Engineering teams to understand customer pain points, develop solutions, and launch products.
Build products that customers love.

Requirements

8+ years of software development experience.
Experience owning multi-quarter projects that solve complex engineering problems and deliver measurable customer impact at scale.
Experience driving large, cross-functional projects end-to-end through ambiguity, including scoping, sequencing, and stakeholder alignment.
Experience with implementing A/B tests or experimentation.
Experience leveraging AI tools or systems to accelerate development, improve testing, and deliver new product capabilities.
Curiosity and experimentation with emerging AI frameworks, applying and sharing best practices for safe AI use.
Ability to mentor engineers to maximize their performance and impact.
Experience in, or interest working in, Ruby on Rails.
Appreciation for a collaborative, test-driven environment.
Ability to build well-structured, maintainable, well-documented code.
Ability to effectively communicate across engineering teams and with business stakeholders.
Travel to Gusto's office for onboarding is required.
