About the Role

Provide continuous observation to patients requiring it, ensuring their safety in accordance with their care plan and under the direction of a professional nurse. The Sitter reports directly to the Unit Director or designee.

Responsibilities

  • Refer patient questions regarding care to the nurse or physician.
  • Monitor patient verbalizations and immediately inform the nurse of any expressed intent to self-harm, harm others, or leave without permission.
  • Observe the patient and maintain a safe environment, performing delegated care that does not interfere with continuous visual contact.
  • Maintain patient safety, including providing CPR, preventing removal of invasive lines, and preventing climbing out of bed.
  • Remain in the patient's room with an unobstructed view, promptly referring patient requests for assistance to nursing staff.
  • Accompany patients for clinical tests or procedures off the unit, remaining within arm's length unless directed otherwise.
  • Obtain RN approval to leave the room temporarily, and wait outside the door if instructed.
  • Obtain RN approval to leave the room if a visitor requests the sitter to leave temporarily.
  • Adjust radio or television settings only at the patient's request.
  • Remove or adjust restraints only in an emergency or if instructed by an RN, notifying the RN of patient discomfort or attempts to remove restraints.
  • Preserve patient dignity while restrained, ensuring coverage, privacy, and addressing essential care needs.
  • Notify the RN immediately in the event of an emergency or sudden change in patient condition/behavior.
  • Feed patients upon assessment and delegation by an RN.
  • Operate all equipment safely after receiving in-service training.
  • Report defective equipment to the Unit Director/Charge Nurse immediately.
  • Follow policies and procedures related to Standard Precautions.
  • Follow emergency protocols.
  • Promote and foster the hospital's mission and philosophy.
  • Actively support and participate in hospital Continuous Quality Improvement endeavors.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all patient care information.
  • Uphold patient rights to independent expression, decision, personal freedom, dignity, and freedom from abuse or social isolation.
  • Provide privacy for patients by knocking before entering, and closing doors or curtains before performing procedures.
  • Report patient complaints or grievances to the Charge Nurse as soon as possible.
  • Attend all annual mandatory educational programs as required.
  • Understand and demonstrate the importance of satisfying customer/patient needs through friendly and caring interaction, attentiveness, and maintaining communication for a secure and pleasant experience.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent experience required.
  • No experience required.
  • BLS CPR required within 90 days of hire date.
  • Good physical and mental health required for long periods of standing and walking.
  • Frequently lifts 10 lbs and occasionally lifts 20 lbs.
  • Manual dexterity necessary for feeding patients.
  • Visual and aural acuity required for adequate observation of patient's condition.
  • Tasks involve exposure to blood, body fluids or tissues.
