About the Role

Polytope Bio, an Astera project, is developing a post-training engine to connect AI models with high-throughput biology. We are seeking a Principal AI Scientist to establish our AI research program, focusing on developing and publishing new reinforcement learning methods and bio AI models. This role offers the opportunity to shape scientific direction and potentially grow into a co-founding leadership position.

Responsibilities

Co-direct the research program, shaping scientific vision, research direction, and technical execution.
Design, implement, and improve model post-training methods for biological language models.
Architect model training infrastructure, build, run, and debug models, training loops, and evaluation metrics.
Partner with the experimental team to integrate lab measurements and model learning into a cohesive system.

Requirements

PhD in machine learning, computational biology, or related field with 2-5 years of post-PhD industry research experience, or equivalent research accomplishments.
Experience training models from scratch, including owning and debugging training runs.
Hands-on experience with generative diffusion models and/or transformer architectures.
Deep familiarity with modern reinforcement learning and preference-optimization methods for deep learning.
Demonstrated track record of strong research through publications, open-source work, or shipped models.
Self-directed with the ability to thrive in a collaborative environment.
Comfort operating with ambiguity and research ownership.
Excited to build infrastructure and grow the team.
