About the Role

The Custodian is responsible for the overall cleanliness, sanitation, appearance, and safety of assigned areas within Hamilton College facilities. This role may also assist with additional projects or maintenance as needed. This is a weekend wrap position requiring Saturday and Sunday work, with potential for Monday/Tuesday or Thursday/Friday off. Work hours are 6:00 am to 2:30 pm, totaling 40 hours per week.

Responsibilities

• Maintain cleanliness and safety of assigned areas through dusting, sweeping, waxing, vacuuming, polishing, washing windows, walls, woodwork, and furniture, and cleaning bathrooms.
• Gather and properly dispose of trash, debris, and recyclables, including emptying and cleaning refuse containers.
• Manage inventory of cleaning supplies, ensuring safe storage and tracking, and requesting replenishment as needed.
• Operate cleaning machinery such as vacuum cleaners, buffing machines, scrubbers, and carpet shampooers safely and efficiently.
• Perform additional tasks including clearing entrances and walkways of ice and snow, changing light bulbs, moving furniture, and reporting building damage or hazardous conditions.
• Provide housekeeping services for guest rooms at the Bristol Campus Center and Roger's Estate, and support Summer Programs.
• Set up and break down furniture and equipment for campus catered functions and special events.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• 1 year of cleaning/custodial experience preferred.
• Equivalent combination of education and experience in a similar field will be considered.
• Ability to handle and properly dispose of hazardous materials and waste.
• Ability to adapt to changing work priorities and work independently or in a team.
• Ability to learn and upgrade job skills as needed.
• Problem-solving and time management skills.
• Ability to work overtime as required.

Skills

• Knowledge of standard custodial methods for cleaning and preserving various surfaces.
• Knowledge of proper use of chemicals and personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Ability to learn and demonstrate custodial procedures.
• Ability to effectively demonstrate proper use of chemicals and PPE.
• Ability to work overtime.
