About the Role
The Core Tax Services Senior Manager advises clients on tax implications, evaluates alternatives to lessen tax burden, and identifies compliance methods. This role serves as the primary client contact for complex tax issues, applying knowledge to understand potential tax issues, communicate risks, and make decisions regarding filing and agency inquiries. The Senior Manager will also be a key member of the office/region leadership team, participating in marketing, networking, and business development while maintaining client relationships.
Responsibilities
- Ensures clients comply with authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens.
- Ensures self and client service teams comply with Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual.
- Conducts top-level review of T/R and resolves all tax issues with client; involves specialists where appropriate.
- Plans for early recognition of material tax and compliance issues and consults with the client and/or partner as appropriate.
- Identifies when research is needed, frames issues clearly, and reports analysis concisely.
- Identifies complex issues for the engagement team and provides research methodology.
- Trains managers/staff on research skills and helps frame tax issues for analysis.
- Involves firm specialists as appropriate.
- Correctly and proactively applies Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual regarding FAS 109 and FIN 48.
- Applies ASC 740, and Firm policies, standards, and BDO TQM regarding them.
- Helps others learn and apply ASC 740 and Firm policies, standards, and BDO TQM.
- Reviews tax provisions and prepared workpapers.
- Explains and discusses with the client components of the income tax provision and uncertain tax positions.
- Assists with developing, recommending, and implementing efficient methods to maximize client benefits.
- Applies tax knowledge and business/industry knowledge to recommend solutions.
- Maximizes client benefits while managing risk.
- Confers with STS specialists to determine applicability of STS consulting specialties.
- Monitors implementation of work plans for tax consulting projects.
- Manages written or phone inquiries from federal and state agencies.
- Provides effective assistance with protests at the appeals level.
- Implements applicable Firm strategies.
- Manages client expectations.
- Develops an in-depth understanding of technical and practical issues and opportunities regarding one or more areas of taxation.
- May organize and conduct effective external CPE training sessions in area of specialization.
- May train and mentor managers/seniors/associates on specialization areas.
- Introduces and develops new or improved ideas to improve the position of clients, the Firm, or Firm personnel.
- Researches and implements tax strategies.
- Consistently makes suggestions for improving previous work products or approaches.
- May lead marketing campaigns.
- Presents complex strategies to clients and prospective clients.
- Supervises associates and senior associates on all projects.
- Reviews work prepared by associates and senior associates and provides review comments.
- Trains Associates and Seniors on using all current software tools.
- Acts as a Career Advisor to associates and senior associates.
- Schedules and manages workload of associates and senior associates.
- Provides verbal and written performance feedback to associates and senior associates.
Requirements
- Eight (8) or more years of prior relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting or consulting/professional services experience required.
- Prior supervisory experience required.
