About the Role
Advocates is seeking a caring Mentor (DSP/1:1 support staff) to support a bright and active young man with a developmental disability who is predominately non-verbal. This role involves assisting him with working on his goals both at home and in his community, helping him participate in everyday activities and achieve his goals.
Responsibilities
- Assist with working on goals both at home and in his community.
- Help him participate in everyday activities and achieve his goals.
- Assist with health and fitness activities, such as using the gym, walking, and hiking.
- Support social skill development, including making community connections and increasing communication.
- Aid in independent living skills, such as grocery shopping, meal preparation, and personal care tasks (including assistance in the restroom and showering).
- Facilitate participation in community classes, such as drumming classes.
- Electronically log each day's time, mileage, and service documentation.
Requirements
- Must be 18 years of age.
- Must have a valid email address.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and auto insurance if required for the job assigned.
- Must demonstrate sound decision-making skills.
- Must demonstrate understanding for the Agency mission.
- Must believe in the philosophy of person-centered services, self-advocacy, and the right and ability of people we serve to self-direct their supports and services.
- Must demonstrate patience and compassion.
- Must have the ability to read and comprehend instructions and correspondence.
- Must have the ability to write correspondence.
- Must have basic reasoning skills including the ability to analyze and problem solve.
- Must be able to tolerate a moderate noise level in the work environment and handle distractions.
- Must be able to handle physical aspects of the job, including sitting, standing, using hands to reach, walk, push, or lift up to 50 pounds.
- Background checks required.
Skills
- Comfortable assisting with personal care needs.
- Experience assisting people with regulating emotions.
- Reliable.
- Creative.
- Active.
- Facilitated communication experience is a plus.
- Keen sense of attention to detail.
- Internet access required.
- Previous experience working 1:1 in a related service environment preferred.
- Knowledge of disability related issues preferred.

Salary/Compensations
- $16.00 - $23.00 Hourly
