About the Role
The Porter is expected to maintain the appearance of the building clean and orderly and generally serving the residents.
Responsibilities
- Reports directly to the Facility Manager regarding all janitorial and facility related issues.
- Immediately reports any major building repairs, hazards, defects and/or supply needs to the Facility Manager.
- Cleans bathrooms including sinks, showers, and toilets.
- Cleans kitchen/serving areas including sinks, counters, small appliances, and serving equipment.
- Bags trash after meals.
- Cleans dining room areas, including washing tables, sweeping, and mopping.
- Cleans the building entrance, hoses sidewalk and entrance when required.
- Removes ice and snow when required.
- Removes garbage debris to proper areas.
- Washes out trashcans and replaces liners.
- Works in the laundry room, filling and removing resident’s laundry from the washer and dryer, folding and arranging laundry as requested.
- Serves meals to residents on the respective shift.
- Works in the clothing room and distributes clothing to residents.
- Cleans all public areas and workspaces as assigned.
- Completes all work orders assigned.
- Cleans and maintains floors, including stripping, waxing, buffing, mopping, and/or vacuuming as assigned.
- Paints and makes minor repairs of the facility and facility property as assigned.
- Assists with ground clean ups and snow removals as assigned.
- Stores and retrieves deliveries and supplies as assigned.
- Assists in any special projects as assigned.
- Takes responsibility for proper care and maintenance of tools, supplies, and equipment.
- Drives agency vehicles as needed and accurately tracks all mileage within the van logbook.
- Retrieves and/or delivers interoffice mail to DHS and DHQ as needed.
- Maintains a safe and sanitary workspace and follows all OSHA regulations.
- May be asked to assume their same position at one of our other shelters operated by the Salvation Army at the discretion of the Operations Coordinator for Shelters or Salvation Army Department Heads.
- Other assignments and tasks may be added at the discretion of the Operations Coordinator for Shelters or Salvation Army Department Heads.
- Has respect and consideration for the people being served.
- Demonstrates the ability to recognize priorities in organization of workflow.
- Able to perform duties independently, with minimal need of direct supervision.
- Maintains the confidentiality of clients, shelter/programs.
- Demonstrates the ability to interact in a positive and helpful manner with clients, visitors, contract staff, volunteers and co-workers.
- Reflects commitment to building a supportive work environment and maintains a positive attitude at the workplace and towards job.
- Projects a good image in dealing with the public and its clients.
- Is willing to make an extra effort to help build a quality and caring shelter/program.
Requirements
- Must be able to work comfortably within a difficult population.
- Life experience along with food certificate can substitute for high school diploma.
Education Level
- High school diploma (or equivalent)
