About the Role

The University of Rochester is seeking individuals to portray patients and scenarios for the training and assessment of healthcare students and professionals. This role provides a safe learning environment for trainees to practice and refine their skills before interacting with actual patients.

Responsibilities

• Portray characteristics of a patient, family member, or health care team member for training and assessment purposes.
• Undergo interviews and physical examinations by healthcare trainees, using scripted materials to portray patient specifics.
• Provide constructive written and verbal feedback from a patient's perspective.
• Deliver formative feedback on learner conduct, communication skills, and medical assessment.
• Consistently and accurately portray various medical scenarios or cases during mock interviews, demonstrations, and examinations.
• Respond to basic medical history questions in a standardized manner.
• Improvise appropriately when an interview or exam deviates from the script.
• Maintain confidentiality of case information, student behaviors, and evaluations.
• Undergo repeated physical examination maneuvers performed on self, wearing a hospital gown.
• Utilize body to instruct learners on correct examination techniques for various body systems.
• Undergo repeated ultrasound examination maneuvers performed on self.
• Memorize and simulate case scenario details, including medical complaints, symptoms, history, exam results, body language, and emotional state.
• Complete standardized patient orientation and ongoing training sessions.
• Participate in group training and mentorship of newly hired standardized patients.
• Provide educationally constructive verbal feedback to learners.
• Receive feedback from supervisors/trainers and incorporate it into future sessions.
• Demonstrate objectivity when interacting with and rating learners.
• Cover main office phones, respond to basic inquiries, and complete administrative functions.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• 6 months of work or volunteer experience preferred.
• Equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience in theatre, a medical field, or education preferred.
• Ability to understand and follow instructions.
• Ability to receive instruction and consistently simulate a case scenario accurately, reliably, and professionally.
• Strong communication skills, both written and spoken.
• Strong reading and writing skills to absorb and use detailed case training and exam procedural information.
• Ability to accurately portray a wide range of roles and scenarios, and to remain in character throughout the interaction with the learner.
• Organization, reliability, and punctuality required.
• Willing and able to work a varied, flexible schedule preferred.
