About the Role
A member of the Commercial Credit team supporting underwriting and ongoing monitoring of credit relationships. This role involves performing analysis, identifying risks, and assessing the creditworthiness of commercial clients.
Responsibilities
- Analyze new credit requests and modifications from deal screening through approval and for the life of the loan, recommending conditions as needed.
- Manage ongoing credit risk of existing loan portfolios through continuous credit monitoring (CCM) activities, including annual reviews, covenant monitoring, and problem loan management.
- Review financial statements, tax returns, due diligence reports, credit bureaus, appraisals, internal credit information, industry research, and peer data to determine further investigation needs.
- Analyze financial information and complete credit analyses for commercial transactions, including independent credit quality assessment, risk rating, and identification of risks and mitigants.
- Make structure recommendations based on scenario analysis.
- Identify suspicious activity and activity contrary to customer interests within existing portfolios.
- Partner with relationship managers (RM) throughout the credit process to maintain accurate risk ratings.
- Spread financial statements and prepare financial/projection models, including cash flow, collateral schedules, covenant sensitivity, and guarantor statements.
- Enter accurate data into Bank systems for underwriting and portfolio management.
- Attend client/prospect calls with RMs to understand businesses and recommend risk ratings.
- Present analysis and address questions during credit discussions or committee presentations.
- Assist in monitoring credit policy compliance and commenting on risks associated with non-compliance.
- Understand and adhere to applicable compliance and operational risk controls.
- Promote an environment that supports belonging and reflects the M&T Bank brand.
- Maintain M&T internal control standards and implement audit points.
- Complete other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics or related field and a minimum of one year’s work experience in commercial credit, public accounting, financial statement preparation/analysis or other financial analysis.
- In lieu of a degree, a combined minimum of 5 years’ higher education and/or work experience, including one year work experience in commercial credit, public accounting, financial statement preparation/analysis or other financial analysis.

- Credit assessments range from initial analyses of new relationships to the Bank to material modifications or restructurings of long-term relationships and ongoing monitoring through the life of the loan.
