About the Role

We are looking for a reporter, Animals Farmed to report with objectivity on factory farming and animal welfare for the upcoming Animals Farmed project. This role will suit someone interested in global food systems, methodology, and ethical issues, who can bring an objective and journalistic lens to the relationship with farmed animals and fish. Animals Farmed is part of the Guardian’s Foundations section and works in close partnership with other departments.

Responsibilities

  • Cover stories as directed, including breaking news
  • Source interviews and stories and develop engaging ways of telling them
  • Monitor sources and diaries for breaking/developing/upcoming stories
  • Collaborate with colleagues, including desk editors, data specialists, and visual journalists
  • Keep colleagues informed of stories in development
  • Utilize social media for open journalism and audience engagement
  • Ensure all stories are accurate and legally compliant

Requirements

  • Demonstrable experience as a journalist, ideally with an international outlook
  • Keen interest in, and preferably knowledge of, industrial farming, animal health and welfare, and its impact on human well-being and diet
  • Knowledge/awareness of digital platforms and print demands
  • Proven experience writing news
  • Experienced in effectively utilizing social media and multimedia
  • Understanding of media law
  • Demonstrable ability to bring a diverse perspective to the role
